Following on from the Robin Hood £5, Maid Marian was the next legendary outlaw to feature in The Royal Mint’s Myths and Legends £5 series. The series previously saw 3 coins paying tribute to characters from Arthurian Legend, but the Maid Marian £5 was the second coin in the Robin Hood collection. Maid Marian played an important role in the Robin Hood legend, serving as both Hood’s one true love and co-leader of the Merry Men. She was a skillful archer and so is depicted on this £5 coin with her bow and arrow on her back, amongst the foliage of Sherwood Forest. Designer, Jody Clark, said that he wanted to show the connection between the characters and the forest, which played the part of both a sanctuary and a strategic ally.
