The Nutcracker £5 coin is the second Christmas £5 coin issued by The Royal Mint. It features a magical design of an enchanting Christmas Nutcracker scene, by acclaimed engraver, Harry Brockway. The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet originally choreographed in 1892 by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivano with a score by Tchaikovsky. The ballet follows the story of a young girl who’s favourite Christmas Toy, the Nutcracker, comes alive and protects her from an evil Mouse King before whisking her away to a magical doll kingdom. According to legend, ‘Nutcracker’ represents strength and power and serves as a guardian to your family. The ballet didn’t gain popularity until the late 1960’s, and is now performed all over the world, especially during the Christmas season.
