As part of a complete re-design of UK coinage, a new reverse was introduced for the 2p coin in 2008.
The design was part of a winning competition entry by Matthew Dent from Bangor in Wales. Six designs from the 1p through to the 50p coins can be pieced together to form a complete image of the Royal Shield of Arms.
The 2p coin is legal tender for amounts up to 20p.
