As part of a re-design of UK coinage in 2008, a new design for the 20p was introduced.
The new reverse was designed by Matthew Dent from Bangor in Wales who won a competition to re-design the UK’s coins. His design incorporated all coins from 1p to £1. When all six coins from 1p through to the 50p are placed together the designs join to form the complete image of the Royal Shield of Arms, and the £1 in this series features the Royal Shield of Arms on its reverse.
